About the Ingredients

Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine fights muscle fatigue by buffering lactic acid buildup.[1]

Creatine monohydrate is time-tested. It’s cheap, safe, and ridiculously effective, with hundreds of studies confirming so.

L-Citrulline Malate 1:1

L-citrulline improves endurance by stimulating nitric oxide production and enhancing blood flow to muscle tissue. [26-30]

In doing so, it also enhances the muscle pump effect, a form of metabolic stress, which is one of the main drivers of muscle growth.

It is very similar to l-arginine; in fact, it is a precursor to l-arginine, but citrulline is more effective than arginine itself at increasing blood arginine levels.[31] This is because l-citrulline is easier to absorb than l-arginine.

Ginseng

Panax Ginseng is an adaptogenic herb with a wide array of health benefits.

It is one of the gems of traditional Chinese medicine with true scientific merit. It does not enhance exercise performance directly, but it does enhance mood, cognition, and nutrient uptake. [40]

This makes for more focused training sessions and competitions and better recovery from exercise.

Betaine

Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine, is an amino acid which has cardioprotective and performance-enhancing properties.

Betaine is also an osmolyte, meaning it promotes the muscle pump effect. It also reduces blood levels of homocysteine, which is a marker of heart disease. [57] We can’t claim that betaine promotes heart health with certainty, but it looks probably.

Effective dosage protocols for betaine range from 2.5 to 3.5 grams before exercise. Erupt contains 6 grams of Betaine per serving.

Taurine

We included taurine in Erupt as a precaution against deficiency.

In rodent research, extremely high doses of beta-alanine can cause taurine deficiency. [58, 59] However, human research on beta-alanine doesn’t report any symptoms of taurine deficiency.

So, there’s 3 grams of Taurine in Erupt, just for safety.

BCAAs

Leucine, isoleucine, and valine, collectively known as branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), are three essential amino acids found in normal protein sources.

BCAAs are often advertised as anabolic supplements which ignite muscle growth, but this is a half truth at best…

This is because most protein sources are already rich in BCAAs. So, simply put, if you eat enough protein on a daily basis, BCAAs won’t help you gain muscle mass faster by directly boosting muscle protein synthesis.

BCAAs are in Erupt as a safety net. Sometimes, it’s been a rough couple of days and you’re exhausted and you haven’t eaten enough, but you still want to make it to the gym. That’s when BCAAs will make a world of difference.

Caffeine

Caffeine is the world’s favorite stimulant. It works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain. [72]

Online, it’s celebrated by some “evidence-based” fitness professionals to be “one of the few supplements that actually works.”

They’re not totally wrong. Research shows that caffeine supplementation…

    Accelerates fat loss [86-88]
    Increases testosterone response to training in men [76, 82, 89]

BUT…

There are two serious limitations to caffeine’s usefulness as a performance-enhancing supplement.

First, it takes uncomfortably large doses of caffeine to enhance power output and accelerate fat loss. For a 200lb guy, I’m talking five large cups of coffee or more. Jitters, anyone?

Second, most of the benefits wane with tolerance, meaning that habitual coffee drinkers won’t get the benefits listed above.

In other words, unless you’re taking a heroic dose of caffeine only once per week or so, you won’t get the full extent of the benefits listed above.

However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not worth taking. Caffeine is also a great mood booster, and it does ward off feelings of tiredness. It is a great supplement to take before your workout - just take it with a grain of salt. Or with theanine. Speaking of which...

L-Theanine

Theanine is an amino acid found in tea that gives tea its “zen” vibes. [90]

It is relaxing and calming, but not sedative. It supports the feeling of calm, masterful control while training.

On its own - i.e., without caffeine - theanine supplementation...

    Heightens mood and subjective well-being [91, 98]
    Reduces anxiety and stress [97-100]
    Improves blood flow by stimulating eNOS production [101]

And that’s just on it’s own - the magic happens when caffeine and theanine are paired together. They make one heck of a couple. Caffeine and theanine synergize to create even stronger positive effects on mood and cognition. [91-93, 102-104]
